Buying an Used Car - Quick Facts

Are you having plans to buy a used car from the used car market? Then read this! In this article I am just providing a brief about the facts one has to check.

  1. Check all the Documents of the vehicle (RC, Insurance, Road Tax and other endorsements)
  2. Check the exteriors of the vehicle for any damage, repaint or touchup  jobs, dents, scratches, corrosion and paint flakes.
  3. Check all the doors including the boot for proper functioning, lock and release, and damages
  4. Get inside the car and check all the interiors for cleanliness and damage, switches and knobs for proper functioning.
    • Check all the seats for proper functioning (height adjustment if available, front and back movement)
    • Check all the power windows for proper functioning if available.
  5. Start the engine and check for any unusual sounds/noise.
  6. Engage the hand brake, open the bonnet and check for any unusual noise/sounds.
    • Leaks from cooling system (radiator, hoses)
    • Oil leaks from engine and lubrication system.
    • Any damage, cracks and broken parts.
  7. Switch off the engine and check the under body for any damage, speedbraker impacts and for any visible leaks.
  8. Start the engine and take the car for a spin
    • Check the suspension for roughness.
    • Check for excessive diving (when applying brakes, the car tends to move forward and backward)
    • Check for excessive steering play, clunks or knocks felt on the steering when driving over the bumpy road or on potholes.
    • Check for the brake vibrations.
  9. Check the A/C (air conditioner) for correct operation, cooling performance and throw.
  10. Check all the tyres including the spare wheel for proper condition and operability.
    • Check for availability and proper functioning of jack and wheel spanner, and other tools.
